HOW DEMOCRACY IS DENIED IN DJIBOUTI

In the last presidential elections held in 2016, the main opposition coalition - USN were successful in defeating UMP, the coalition supporting the Presidency of Ismaïl Omar Guelleh. However, figures were manipulated and alternate results released to declare a fourth mandate of President Guelleh. Several leaders of the USN coalition who cried foul were silenced by shooting or poisoning them to death. A forceful change in constitution in 2016 further opens the gate to Guelleh’s insatiable lust for power as he plans to run presidential election for a fifth mandate in 2021. The fifth mandate of the Presidency for Guelleh would send Djibouti on a warpath of bloodshed and brutality as a violent civil war is most likely to take place, drawing the country closer to the fate of its unstable neighbors Somalia and Yemen. Only international intervention by the US and other superpowers can save Djibouti from the impending carnage.”
